Iolanthe is a delightful operetta about a fairy banished for Fairyland for life for marrying a mortal. Gilbert's incisive witty political satire is as relevant today as it was when Iolanthe was first performed in 1882 and many consider the Ialanthe music among the best of Sullivan's work. In this "fairy opera", the House of Lords is lampooned as a bastion of the ineffective , privileged and dim-witted. The political party system and other institutions also come in for a dose of satire. Performed by the acclaimed Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, on tour for the first time after headlining the world famous international Gilbert and Sullivan Festival for the past twenty years, this sparkling new production is simply a joy.
